Second
Spin.

A youth-led upcycling and donation project β€” learning to repair and transform clothing, then donating the results to people who need them. Reducing fast fashion, building skills, and making community responsibility concrete.

Why Second Spin exists

Two problems. One project.

Young people in Finland are among the heaviest consumers of fast fashion in Europe, and many are aware of the problem β€” but lack practical alternatives or skills to act differently. At the same time, organisations working with vulnerable groups regularly receive clothing donations that are unwashed, broken, or unusable. The people who need support most receive what no one else wanted.

Second Spin addresses both things at once: teach youth to fix and transform clothing they already own, then donate what they have made β€” properly finished, cleaned, and given with intention β€” to people who can actually use it.

How it works

Collect. Make. Give.

Each monthly cycle follows the same three-step rhythm β€” simple enough to repeat, meaningful enough to build something real over time.

Step 1 β€” Collect materials

  • Monthly visits to thrift stores and recycling centres
  • Donations sourced from participants and community contacts
  • Priority given to items that can be meaningfully transformed
  • Materials bought secondhand when purchase is necessary

Step 2 β€” Upcycle together

  • Monthly group sessions focused on a specific skill or technique
  • Peer teaching β€” members with existing skills share them
  • Each participant aims to complete at least one item per session
  • Progress documented with before-and-after photographs

Step 3 β€” Donate in person

  • Finished items donated to homeless shelters and support organisations
  • Where possible, delivered in person β€” not dropped off anonymously
  • Direct contact with donation recipients builds understanding of need

What participants take home

  • Practical clothing repair and upcycling skills for life
  • A repair-first habit rather than a buy-first instinct
  • A concrete experience of community giving β€” not abstract charity
  • Creative confidence and hands-on problem-solving experience

Skills programme

A year of learning, month by month.

The programme runs across a twelve-month cycle, each period focused on a specific skill or technique β€” progressing from fundamentals to free practice.

Months 1–3

Sewing fundamentals

Hand sewing and sewing machine use β€” the foundation for everything that follows. The longest theme because it underpins all other techniques.

Month 4

Buttons & zippers

Replacing and repairing fastenings β€” one of the most practical skills for extending the life of clothing that would otherwise be discarded.

Months 5–6

Crocheting

Basic crochet techniques taught peer-to-peer by participants who already have the skill β€” a deliberate model of knowledge-sharing within the group.

Months 7–8

Dyeing & bleaching

Transforming the appearance of garments entirely β€” turning something worn out or stained into something new and usable.

Months 9–12

Free practice

Participants choose any technique learned during the programme and apply it independently β€” consolidating skills and beginning to self-direct their own making.

How we operate

Values in practice, not on paper.

Sustainability first

Public transport used for all travel. Plant-based food served at sessions. Materials sourced by donation or secondhand. Buying new is the last resort.

Accessibility by design

Sessions run in English to include all members. Neurodivergent participants are accommodated with breaks and quiet options. Food allergies are considered in catering.

Donation with dignity

We aim to donate items that have been properly finished and are genuinely useful β€” not leftovers. Where possible, we visit the recipients directly.

Who it is for

Youth who want to do something real.

Second Spin is designed for young people β€” primarily in the 18–29 age range β€” who are interested in sustainability, community action, or simply learning practical skills in a collaborative setting. No prior experience is needed.

The project is run by a small team of young people who bring different skills β€” sewing, crocheting, art, organisation, finance β€” and learn from each other. It is a model that can be replicated by any group with similar interests and motivation.

Want to join?

Second Spin runs on people who want to make things and give back.
